The Enoteca Trastevere is located on Via della Lungaretta, just steps away from the stunning 16th century Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, and home to the Basilica di Santa Maria. According to legend, the church was founded by Pope S. Callisto on the “Taberna Meritoria” where according to legend, in 38 A.D. oil erupted from the ground, an event later interpreted as a symbol of the Messiah’s arrival.
In 1936, the property of today’s Enoteca Trastevere was a modest grocery store selling a limited variety of products. One could purchase bread, a small selection of different types of pasta, olive oil, soda water, ammonia for cleaning, and coffee. As the years went by, the number of products being sold grew, two in part to the economic revival of the years following World War II. The only remaining constant was the shopkeeper Carmela who, along whit her husband Giggi, became a great symbol of the Trastevere neighborhood for the remainder of the century. The Di Mattia family has always treated their customers whit utmost fairness and respect and, in time, these customers returned the family’s affection with their own. Carmela’s store became as familiar to them as a room in their own homes.
Trastevere’s residents love to spend time in the streets of their neighborhood, oftentimes bringing their own chairs and tables out onto the street to dine in front of their stores or their homes. They take walks around the neighborhood , stopping into different stores selling handmade goods, walking past the street-side “bancarelle” and street artists, and stop when they have reached their favorite restaurant, enoteca, or bar to talk amongst friends and neighbors. These are the places they call home.
The great jazz musician Chet Baker, who lived in Trastevere for several years, shared that He felt at home in this neighborhood, as if He were back home in Greenwich Village where, He observed, people interact and enjoy their neighborhood similarly to those He met in Trastevere. Given that his music, elegant, vibrant and emotive as it was, embodied the essence of Rome and Trastevere, it is no surprise that Chet Baker became enamored by this city.
In 1992, Carmela’s daughter Etta took over the family business and transformed the property into an enoteca with a huge clientele coming from all corners of the world, from Ireland to Germany, from Australia to the USA, and from South Africa to France.
The enoteca also serves as a gathering place for Roman artists and has become a venue for art exhibits, poetry readings, film screenings, and jazz and blues music concerts. Spending time in Enoteca Trastevere, surrounded by good conversation, excellent food and fine wines makes one think of the ironic and wise words of Henny Youngman, the British-American comedian and violinist: “When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.”
